Junior Design Engineer

Role Purpose

As a Junior Design Engineer you would be expected to develop your understanding in the field, learning from you peers and the senior engineers in technical areas and industry best practices.  

This would include any basic engineering knowledge or processes used by Pickering Electronics in production and the processes used by our suppliers.  You will also be required to understand our product catalogue and what niches these products fill.  Ensuring your work is completed to a high standard, you will be working within an engineering team dedicated to the maintenance and development of the product catalogue at Pickering Electronics.

 Working alongside the manufacturing engineering and manufacturing technician teams you will refine production methods for existing products and aid in introducing innovative products to the production environment.  In order to do this you will ensure all work is appropriately documented and control processes followed.

If historical documents are found to be substandard or missing, you would be expected to generate these with supervision.  You will also develop measurement processes under guidance to ensure that we have a true understanding of the components we are receiving and the product we produce and deliver.

All developments should be considered with a potential to automate production solutions either immediately or in the future.  This will provide you with the opportunity to apply your technical expertise, creativity, and problem-solving skills.  

To achieve this you will be collaborating with various departments, sharing skills, conducting research, and actively communicating to facilitate the continuous development and improvement of Pickering Electronics products.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Testing and Validation: Ensure functionality, and reliability of the products produced. You will perform trial runs, collect and analyse results, and make necessary adjustments or modifications products, process as well as jigs and fixtures to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ensure development and consideration of measurement and control procedures relating to  incoming and outgoing goods.  Thoroughly recording information about our products and ensure consistent high quality.  
  • Research and consider new technologies or materials that can be leveraged for Pickering Electronics products.
  • Ensuring appropriate documentation for existing products and processes as well as ensuring any holes in existing documentation are filled and in place for production, sales, purchasing and accounts for legacy products.  
  • Continuous improvement of processes used in production of legacy products. Reproducing jigs and fixtures making adjustments when needed and examining end user packaging where appropriate.
  • Continuous Improvement of product by taking the lead in adaptions to the existing catalogue to reduce production issues and increase component quality.  This will include developing testing and evaluation of the changes made.
  • Be conscious of potential end user applications and how any changes made to product or process may effect these.  
  • Support senior and more experienced engineers and other teams in development of new products and processes. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Qualifications (HNC, HND, degree) in an appropriate engineering field and/or relevant breadth and history of industry experience.
  • Experience: No industry experience required if educated in relevant engineering fields or can otherwise demonstrate competency.
  • Skills/Competencies:
  • Eager to learn new skills and embrace innovative processes to promote product improvements. 
  • Motivated, with good problem-solving skills. 
  • Attention to detail.
  • A team player with excellent communication skills. 
  • Approachable and flexible.
  • Creative and forward thinking. 
  • Ability to document projects, read drawings and schematics. 
  • Knowledge of general engineering practices and tooling.
  • Understanding constraints of handling of miniature electronic components.  
  • Knowledge of 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferable).
  • Understanding of basic electronics.
  • Understanding of testing and measurement techniques and how these are applied. 
  • Some knowledge of appropriate technologies used within our processes or that have potential to be used.
